Beginners Guide to E Cigarettes and Vaping

At first glance E Cigarettes can look daunting and confusing. You may see countless different types of ecigarettes on the market and be confused by the jargon surrounding it. Don’t worry; in essence e cigarettes are very simple to understand. The basic components are shared among all types of ecigarettes, although individual pieces vary in form as well as function. The ecigarette in its most basic form is a battery powered unit that vaporizes a Liquid (containing vegetable glycerin, propelene glycol, and optionally nicotine) through a heating element inside the tank. Drawing on an ecigarette while pressing the button on it will heat the coil to a predetermined voltage or temperature, which allows the E Liquid itself to vaporize. Bare in mind it is not producing smoke, rather vapor, as the temperatures are much lower than anything producing smoke.

The Battery – This powers the device
Batteries come in many shapes and sizes, however their purpose is simple: to provide power to the coil to heat up the e liquid, and convert it from a liquid into vapor, which is then inhaled. Batteries in ecigarettes are rechargable and most batteries will last the typical user around 6-12 hours worth of use (depending on size and use frequency).

The Tank – This holds the Liquid
There are countless styles of tanks, however the main purpose for the tank is to hold the liquid before being heated. Many variations within tanks come down to the airflow (depending on whether you prefer a cigarette like draw or more of an open air option), and the type of coil the tank can support.

The Coil – This heats the Liquid
The coil can be considered the heart of the e cigarette – The coil is contained within the center of the tank and acts as a bridge between liquid and vapor. The coil is simply a strand of wire wrapped inside a casing surrounded by cotton. The cotton acts as a wick to soak up the e liquid, before the wire is heated up and converts the liquid into vapor. The hole in the center of the coil allows air to pass through and is the direct transfer system that allows you to inhale the vapor.
